Barbara Jean "BJ" Wood

Commissioner
Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
2001 Recipient
Successes
BJ graduated from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in 1975 with a degree in social work. She worked hard with others within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities to establish the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. In 1986, Governor Dukakis appointed her as the first Commissioner. She works with the legislators and service providers on how to effectively serve these populations.
Challenges
BJ always loves a challenge. She enjoys working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing people to understand and use Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and our State Government. She and the MCDHH staff work hard to maintain funding for MCDHH, and she feels honored to work as the Commissioner.
