Lamonte Grant

Pastor
Immanuel Deaf Church
2000 Recipient

Successes

Lamonte helped to establish the Immanuel Deaf Church so that Deaf people can worship God in their own language, ASL. He enjoys working with both Deaf and hearing people of all cultures and abilities, and the congregation continues to grow.

Challenges

When Lamonte moved to this country from Barbados, he knew he wanted to continue to play squash. Whe he arrived at the squash club, he realized that he was the only Deaf person and the only black person there, and everyone else was hearing and white. He was not sure he would be accepted as an equal. When they saw that he was friendly and a skillful player, their attitudes changed. Now they play in tournaments and socialize together, and Lamonte uses gestures and mime to teach hearing friends how to play the game.

Advice to Horace Mann Students

"I encourage you to get as much education as you can. Education is important because it will help you when you try to achieve your goals. Also, try to focus on the positive things in your life and not on the negative things. Find people who will support you as you look for solutions to your problems."
